HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The University of Memphis softball team (7-12) left four runners on in scoring position while committing three errors in a 3-2 loss to Campbell (9-7) in the final game of the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational.
The Tigers threatened early in the game, putting two runners on base in the first and second innings. In the second, Cierra Mangum and Sara Pearson began the inning with singles for Memphis before being moved over into scoring position. However, a fly out would end the threat for Memphis.
Campbell took the lead in the top of the third when Stephanie Jones doubled to left center to score two for the Camels.
Memphis got a run in the bottom of the fourth with Mangum recording her first career home run with a shot over the center field wall to cut Campbell's lead to 2-1.
Campbell answered in the fifth with another run as Brittany Bruce came home to score from second on a throwing error by the Tigers to make it 3-1.
In the sixth inning, Morgan Mosby led off the frame with her second home run of the season to bring Memphis within one. A single by Kelly Braman kept the momentum going for Memphis, but she would be the last Tiger to reach base in the inning.
Down to the last out, Breslin Perry kept Memphis alive with a single down the right field line. Lelani Bernardino followed with a single up the middle before Ijiah Hargrove singled to left. Pinch runner Wheeler Hill rounded third on Hargrove's single before being thrown out at the plate to end the game for Memphis.
Courtney Roberts (3-3) picked up the win for Campbell while Ellen Roberts (3-8) suffered the loss for Memphis. Mosby and Mangum both led with Memphis with two hits apiece while the Tigers outhit the Camels 9-5.
Mosby, Hargrove and Laura Curtis were all named to the Bank of Hawaii All-Tournament team.
Memphis is back in action Wednesday with a trip to Starkville, Miss., to face Mississippi State at 5:30 p.m. before opening Conference USA play on the road at UTEP in El Paso, Texas on Saturday and Sunday.
