EL PASO, Texas - The University of Memphis softball team (8-13, 1-0 C-USA) opened up Conference USA action with a 5-1 win over UTEP (7-9, 0-1 C-USA) on Saturday afternoon at Helen of Troy Field.

Memphis took a 4-0 lead in the second and never looked back as Cierra Mangum drove in Laura Curtis on a double to right center to put the Tigers up 1-0. Memphis tacked on two more runs with Kelly Braman scoring on a wild pitch before Mangum stole home to make it 3-0 Memphis. The Tigers added their final run of the inning when Lindsie Knowles was brought home after a bunt single from Breslin Perry to give Memphis a 4-0 advantage heading to the bottom of the second.

The Miners got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with Kayla Oranger scoring after a single from Kayleigh Walts to make it 4-1 after five.

Sara Pearson and Perry recorded back-to-back singles in the sixth to put two on with two out. However, a grounder to the pitcher would end the threat for the Tigers in the inning. In the bottom of the frame, Ellen Roberts struck out two Miners before forcing a grounder to herself to head to the seventh with a 4-1 lead.

The Tigers added another run in the seventh as Curtis reached second on a two-out single down the right field line before advancing on a fielding error in the outfield. Braman followed with a single through the left side to give Memphis a 5-1 advantage. In the bottom half of the inning, Roberts struck out two more while forcing an infield popup to give the Tigers a 5-1 victory.

Curtis finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one walk while Braman and Perry each added two hits for the Tigers. Roberts (4-9) picked up the win for Memphis, finishing with seven strikeouts while allowing six hits and two walks. Danielle Pearson (3-4) was given the loss for the Miners in five innings of action.
