Memphis Scores Two in Seventh to Top UTEP, 4-2
March 9, 2013
EL PASO, Texas - The University of Memphis softball team (9-13, 2-0 C-USA) scored two runs in the top of the seventh to record a 4-2 win over UTEP (7-10, 0-2 C-USA) in game two of their doubleheader Saturday night at Helen of Troy Field. UTEP got leadoff hits in the first and second innings, but Jordan Richwood struck out four to begin the game to keep the Miners off the board in the early going. The Tigers were held hitless until the fourth inning when Cierra Mangum hit a two-out double to right center to bring home Kelly Braman for a 1-0 score. Memphis added an unearned run after Libby Goranson reached first to allow Mangum to come home and push the Tigers' lead to 2-0. In the bottom frame, the Miners wasted little time in tying the game up at 2-all as Ariel Armendariz drew a one-out walk before Kawehiokalani Netane singled to left field to put two on with two out for UTEP. A double to left from Colleen Hohman knotted the game up after four innings of play. Lelani Bernardino and Ijiah Hargrove began the fifth with walks for Memphis before both moved into scoring position. However, a fly out to right field ended an opportunity for Memphis to regain the lead. The Miners put runners on the corners with one out in the bottom of the sixth as Kayleigh Walts reached on an error before Alanna Leasau singled up the middle to begin the charge for UTEP. However, Richwood kept the Miners in check by forcing a popup and a pop foul to end the inning. With two on and just one out, Morgan Mosby put Memphis on top with a single through the left side to score Bernardino for a 3-2 lead. The hits kept coming for the Tigers as Curtis followed with a single to right field to bring home Hargrove and stretch Memphis' lead to 4-2. Down to its last out, UTEP stayed alive with a double down the right field line from Ashley Collazo, but the momentum would be short lived for the Miners as Kayla Black fouled out to Mosby to give Memphis a 4-2 win. Richwood (4-3) earned the win for Memphis, finishing with eight strikeouts and allowing seven hits and one walk. Hohman (3-4) was handed the loss for the Miners as she finished with six strikeouts, but allowed eight walks in a complete game effort. Memphis will wrap up its three-game series against UTEP tomorrow with an 11 a.m. CT contest. Game Notes
