Memphis vs. Utah - Post Game Notes

Senior Leandra Hines scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Hines led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a sac bunt by senior Leila Dolfo. Hines then scored from second on an error by the second baseman off a hard hit groundball by junior Vanessa Walle. The run is the seventh of the season for Hines. Leandra Hines scored the second run for Memphis in the bottom of the fifth in nearly the exact same way as her run in the fourth. Hines reached first on a two-out walk and stole second. After Leila Dolfo was hit by the pitch, Vanessa Walle hit a groundball to shortstop that was booted allowing Hines to score from second. Hines now has eight runs on the year. Utah scored one run in the top of the sixth to draw within one of Memphis. Brooke Olson was hit by the pitch to lead off the inning and reached third on a single by Kara Foster. Foster was thrown out at second by Kamri Chester trying to stretch the single up the middle into a double. Whitney Holm later hit a one-out single through the left side to score Olson from third. The Utes had runners on second and third with two outs when Brittany Parker hit a line drive to left field that senior Leandra Hines made a diving catch to end the inning. Freshman Kamri Chester led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double down the left line. It is her fourth double of the season. Freshman Kamri Chester scored the third run for Memphis in the bottom of the sixth to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead. Chester led off the inning with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Sophomore Maddie McKinley then knocked in Chester with a hard hit ground ball to short. The RBI is the 11th of the season for McKinley and the run is Chester's 16th.
Freshman Lelani Bernardino increased her hitting streak to a season high eight games with a RBI triple down the right line in the bottom of the sixth. The triple is the second of the season for Bernardino and scored freshman Jessica Phillips from first base. The RBI is the 10th of the season for Bernardino and the run is Phillips' first career. Junior Leigh Rowan hit a pinch hit RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to score the third run of the inning for Memphis. The double to right center scored Bernardino from third. Rowan now has seven RBI on the year and the run is Bernardino's 19th. Utah loaded the bases with one out on three hits in the top of the seventh. Junior Vanessa Walle, pitching in relief, got Kara Foster to strike out looking and then Staci Hemingway hit a ball deep to left field that senior Leandra Hines caught above the fence to end the game and take away a grand slam that would have tied the game. The win is the first for Memphis in neutral territory this season. The Tigers are now 1-8 when playing a neutral opponent. After losing its first game of the year when outhitting an opponent earlier in the day against No. 9 Cal, Memphis won its first game of the season when being outhit. Utah outhit the Tigers 8-5. |
