ROCK HILL, S.C. - Held without a hit through four and two thirds innings, the University of Memphis softball team battled back from an early deficit to beat Gardner-Webb, 2-1, in the Winthrop/adidas Invitational on Friday.
The Tigers (14-10) scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a two-out passed ball that scored junior Brittany Gooch from third.
Freshman Kimber Bossom (6-4) won her second-straight game, allowing two hits in a complete game effort. Both of Gardner-Webb's hits were infield singles.
Bulldogs' (9-12) starting pitcher Taryn Beck held Memphis to one hit in five plus innings of work, but allowed eight walks as the U of M left 10 runners on in the game and had runners in scoring position in every inning but the first. Beck earned a no decision. Alison Coffey (2-3) suffered the loss after pitching an inning and two thirds and allowing one unearned run on one hit.
Redshirt-freshman Heather Mott registered the Tigers' first hit of the game in the fifth inning on a two-out single to right field that scored junior Leila Dolfo from second to knot the game at one. Memphis had several hard hit balls in the game, but came away with only two hits with Gooch collecting the second on a single in the bottom of the seventh.
Gardner-Webb took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Kelsey Witter earned a leadoff walk and advanced two bases on a sacrifice bunt. Kelly Linsley then knocked her in with a slow hit single to shortstop. The Bulldogs would only have two other base runners in the game, with a single to second base in the fourth and a leadoff walk in the sixth with the runner later being picked off by junior catcher Kimmi Hayden.
Memphis will next play Big East foe Providence (5-9) later today at approximately 5 p.m. (EST) on Field C at the Winthrop Softball Complex. The Tigers will take on Vermont and Furman at 1 and 5 p.m. on Saturday.
