Memphis falls to Marshall, 6-0

Marshall (15-10, 5-1 C-USA) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo home run by Bri Anna Hope. The Herd then scored four runs on five hits in the second inning on a two RBI single by Alianna Telles and a two-run double by Rebecca Gamby that gave MU a 5-0 lead. Marshall capped the scoring in the sixth inning with an unearned run off a double steal with Taylor Thompson coming home.
Memphis (6-22, 0-6 C-USA) had four hits in the game and stranded four base runners. The Tigers had a runner thrown out at the plate in the fourth inning. Sophomore Ellen Roberts hit a one-out double to right center and senior Jessica Phillips followed with a single up the middle. Freshman pinch runner Breslin Perry attempted to score from second on the play, but was thrown out at home by the center fielder. The U of M stranded Phillips at third in the inning.
The Tigers later left runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh inning. Roberts had her second hit of the game to lead off the frame and sophomore Amber Lindahl hit a two-out bloop double. Sophomore Ashleigh King lined a shot directly to the right fielder to end the game.
Roberts (4-10) started the game for Memphis in the circle and suffered the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits in an inning and two-third. Freshman Jordan Richwood pitched the final five and a third innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts.
Andi Williamson (10-6) earned the victory for Marshall, throwing four shutout innings with two hits and eight strikeouts. Natalee Pulver picked up the save with three innings in relief and allowed no runs with two hits and three strikeouts.
Roberts led the Tigers offensively with a 2-for-3 performance. Telles led Marshall with a 2-for-4 outing and two RBI. Hope also went 2-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored.
Memphis will play its next five games on the road. The Tigers will take on Samford in Birmingham, Ala., in a doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 4 p.m. and then travel to Houston, Texas, for a three-game series at Houston on Saturday and Sunday, March 24-25.
