Tigers Take Bite Out of Bulldogs with Three-Run Inning

MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis softball team plated three runs in the second inning to help the team defeat Samford 3-1 on Tuesday night at the Tigers Softball Complex. Junior outfielder Ijiah Hargrove went 2-for-4 in the game and delivered a two-out, two-run triple to left center to cap the only scoring inning for the Tigers (12-17) in the second. Junior second baseman Kelly Braman also had a multiple-hit game, finishing 2-for-3, and senior center fielder Lelani Bernardino drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly. Junior Ellen Roberts (6-11) went the distance in the circle for Memphis to pick up her sixth victory of the season. Roberts scattered six hits, giving up one run and striking out four with a pair of walks. Memphis matched Samford with six hits in the game and both teams left eight runners on base. The Tigers scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the second to take the lead. Singles by Amber Lindahl and Wheeler Hill, along with a walk to Georganna Goodwin, loaded the bases for the U of M with one out. Bernardino drove in the first run of the game with a lined sacrifice fly to right field. Hargrove then tripled for the second time this season to drive in two runs. Megan Dowdy scored the lone Samford (9-14) run in the top of the sixth after leading off the inning with a double. She scored on a single to left field by Abby Adams. Shelby Scott (0-4) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs, allowing three runs on five hits with a couple strikeouts. Caitlin Bice threw the final four innings in relief and allowed just one hit with three strikeouts. Memphis will host a doubleheader with Alcorn State on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Tigers then host a three-game series with UAB on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free for all home games. Game Notes
