Walle Tosses Shutout as Memphis Downs UTEP 2-0
March 20, 2010
MEMPHIS, Tenn.—Vanessa Walle tossed her first-career complete game shutout to lead the University of Memphis Tigers (13-8; 3-1 C-USA) past the UTEP Miners (20-10; 3-2 C-USA) 2-0 in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
The Tigers pitched back-to-back shutouts for the first time since the 2006 season, when they did it on three occasions. Memphis also improves to 12-1 this season when scoring two or more runs.
In addition to leading the Tigers in the circle, Walle also got things started at the plate for Memphis. Her one-out single in the bottom of the first gave Memphis a 1-0 lead and proved to be the game-winning run.
Kelly Curran (1-1) suffered the loss for the Miners after giving up one run on three hits to go along with one strikeout and three bases on balls.
Walle improves to 5-4 on the season with the victory. She allowed no runs on four hits to go along with five strikeouts to improve her C-USA leading ERA to 0.87.
The Tigers scored their second run in the bottom of the sixth on a Leigh Rowan double. Rowan also hit an RBI double in the first game of the doubleheader.
With the victory, Memphis improves to 7-0 at home all-time against UTEP. The Tigers are now 7-3 at the Tiger Softball Complex this season.
The Tigers faceoff against the Miners again Sunday afternoon in the final game of the series. Due to expected inclement weather, the start time of Sunday’s game has been moved back to 1:00 pm (CT).
