Tigers Strand 13 in 6-4 Loss to UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Memphis softball team struggled to deliver with runners in scoring position stranding 13 in a 6-4 loss to UAB at George Ward Park on Saturday.
Both team fought the strike zone in a game that had a combined 17 walks. Three Tigers had multi-walk games, while Memphis freshman pitcher Kimber Bossom allowed nine bases on balls. Bossom (7-5) gave up six runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in the loss.
Memphis (16-12) had a chance in the top of the seventh to tie the game after putting the first two batters on base. The Tigers would load the bases for the third time, but were held scoreless to end the game.
Sophomore Leigh Rowan led the team in hitting with a 2-for-3 performance. It is her first multi-hit game since February 23 against Alabama A&M.
Memphis threatened in the first inning, moving two runners in scoring position with one out. Juniors Leila Dolfo and Leandra Hines led off the inning with back-to-back singles and advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Lindsay Kelso. However, the Tigers stranded the runners as Jennifer Nelson pitched out of the jam.
The Blazers scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. Holly Krzan led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on an error. With two outs, Kayla Harris singled to second base to knock in the unearned run.
UAB added a run in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Leigh Walker hit a one-out double to right center and advanced to third on a fly ball to right. Cameron Skates then hit a two-out infield single to score the run.
After loading the bases in the top of the fourth with no outs, Memphis brought two runs home to tie the game at two. Redshirt-freshman Heather Mott led off the inning and reached on an error. She was followed by a single from Rowan and a walk to junior Tori Gross. Freshman Maddie McKinley entered the game as a pinch hitter and drew a RBI walk for the first run, and then Dolfo hit a sacrifice fly to left to tie the game.
In the bottom of the fourth, UAB broke the tie with three runs to take a 5-2 advantage. The Blazers walked three times in the inning and had one batter hit by the pitch to score the runs on two hits. Walker and Harris both had RBI singles in the inning.
The Tigers added two more unearned runs in the sixth inning. Gross led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a single by junior Brittany Gooch. A fielding error allowed Dolfo to reach first and load the bases with one out, and then another UAB error on a ball hit by Kelso allowed two runs to score.
Memphis will complete the three game series with UAB on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Both games can be followed live through GameTracker.
