Hummel Strikes Out 13 in One-Hit, 1-0, Shutout Over Saint Louis
March 23, 2010
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Carly Hummel struck out 13 and allowed just one hit as the University of Memphis softball team shutout Saint Louis, 1-0, in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday. The 13 K's is a career high for the freshman and ties a school individual record set by Jenna Kubesch against Alcorn State on April 12, 2007. It is the third time Hummel has struck out 10 or more in a game this season and eighth time in 10 starts that she has K'd at least nine batters. The Bakersfield, Calif., native earned her fourth shutout of the season and third one hitter to improve to 8-4 on the season. With the game scoreless going into the seventh inning, senior Vanessa Walle delivered a pinch hit one-out single through the right side to score Cheyenne Mascarenas from second for the only run in the game. The Billikens would put runners on first and second in the bottom of the inning on a pair of walks, but Hummel pitched out of the jam to preserve the win. Memphis improves to 14-9 on the season and is now 4-6 in one-run games. Saint Louis drops to 11-10 on the year. Kelcie Matesa (5-5) took the loss and allowed one run on five hits with six strikeouts. Keanah Prestridge led Memphis with a 2-for-3 performance for her second career multi-hit game. The Billikens attempted to put the first run on the board in the fifth inning. Pinch hitter Laura Bohning broke up a Memphis no hitter with one out in the fifth inning with a single to left field. After Kristin Nicoletti walked to put runners at first and second, both runners advanced on a double steal. The throw to third by Prestridge went into left field, but Lelani Bernardino threw out Bohning attempting to score on the play at home for the third out. In the top of the seventh, Jessica Phillips led off with a single up the middle and was replaced by Mascarenas as a pinch runner. A sac by Alex Marshall moved Mascarenas to second, and following a walk to Kailey Kassner, Walle delivered her third game-winning RBI of the season. Memphis and Saint Louis close out the day with the second game of the doubleheader.
