Memphis took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but UAB scored a run in the second, four in the third and two in the fifth to jump to a 7-2 lead. The Tigers scored three more runs in the sixth inning, but fell short in their comeback attempt.
Senior center fielder Lelani Bernardino led the team with a 2-for-3 outing at the plate and two runs scored. Junior right fielder Ijiah Hargrove also had a couple runs scored and an RBI, while freshman third baseman Cierra Mangum drove in a career high two runs with a double.
Junior RHP Ellen Roberts (7-12) suffered the loss after allowing five runs on five hits in two and two-third innings of work. Sophomore Sara Pearson pitched the final four and a third innings and allowed two runs on two hits with three strikeouts. Memphis pitching combined for nine walks and two hit batters in the game.
Memphis took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs on three hits in the first inning. Bernardio led off the inning with her 25th career double that moved her into a tie for fourth place in school history. She came around to score on a bunt single up the first base line by Hargrove. Hargrove advanced to second on the play on a fielding error by the second baseman and later scored from third on a single through the left side from Laura Curtis. The Tigers stranded the bases loaded in the inning.
UAB cut the lead to 2-1 with a run in the top 2nd. Anna Kimbrell was hit by the pitch and advanced to second on a walk to Megan McGrath. With two outs, Heather Pearson singled to left field to drive in Kimbrell. Roberts got Amy Dennis to pop out to third to end the inning with the bases loaded after giving up a couple walks.
The Blazers scored four runs in the top third to take a 5-2 lead. Whitney Fletcher led off the inning with a walk and was followed by a single from Kate Armstrong. With one out, Kimbrell drilled a three-run home run to center to give UAB its first lead.
UAB scored a fourth run in the inning on an illegal pitch. Pinch runner Kelly Britt scored from third on what would have been an inning-ending groundout to short by Heather Pearson, but because of the illegal pitch the play resulted in a walk and an advance for Britt.
Fletcher drove in two more UAB runs in the top of the fifth with a double to right field to increase the Blazers’ lead to 7-2.
Memphis scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the UAB lead to 7-5. Bernardino was hit by the pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a stolen base and a throwing error. Morgan Mosby drove her in with a single to right field and Mangum later followed with a two-run double to center.
Fletcher led the Blazers offensively, hitting 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Kimbrell finished 1-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Lannah Campbell (3-1) earned the victory in the circle, allowing five runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Lauren Webster picked up the save, allowing no hits in the final two innings.
