UAB Come Back Late as Memphis Falls 6-4 in Eight Innings

MEMPHIS - The University of Memphis softball team was one out away from a win in game two of a doubleheader with UAB, but the Blazers came back to win 6-4 in eight innings on Saturday at the Tigers Softball Complex.
Down to its final strike, UAB (17-7, 7-1 C-USA) scored three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at four and then hit two solo home runs in the eighth to complete the doubleheader sweep.
After two quick outs to begin the seventh, Memphis sophomore pitcher Jordan Richwoodquickly went ahead of pinch hitter Amy Dennis, 0-2. But after fouling the third pitch off, Dennis took four-straight balls to earn a walk and Heather Pearson followed with a single to put the tying run at the plate. On a full-count pitch, Whitney Fletcher hit a deep ball to right field for a triple to clear the bases. An error in right allowed Fletcher to score on the play to tie the game.
In extra innings, Chandler Orr and Megan McGrath hit back-to-back solo home runs to give UAB its first lead and seal the 6-4 loss for Memphis (14-19, 3-5 C-USA).
Junior right fielder Ijiah Hargrove went 2-for-4 for Memphis with two runs scored and an RBI. She finished with four hits, four runs scored and two RBI in the doubleheader. Junior first baseman Kelly Bramanalso went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.
Richwood (6-6) shutout UAB through the first five innings before allowing six runs in the final three frames for the loss. She allowed eight hits and four walks with eight strikeouts.
Lannah Campbell (4-1) earned her second win of the day after shutting Memphis down in relief for the final six innings. She retired 17-straight before allowing a two-out single in the eighth. Leigh Streetman started for UAB and allowed four runs on five hits with a couple walks in two innings.
Memphis took a 2-0 lead in the first inning for the second-straight game. Hargrove singled and advanced to second on an error. She scored on a two-out single to center by Braman. A double to left by senior shortstop Laura Curtisdrove in Braman for the second run.
The Tigers added to their lead in the second inning. With a runner on first and two outs, Hargrove hit her third triple of the year to right center to score senior center fielder Lelani Bernardino. Senior second baseman Morgan Mosbyfollowed with a single up the middle to score Hargrove.
Fletcher led the Blazers offensively, finishing 3-for-4 in the game with three RBI and two runs scored. She went 5-for-7 with five RBI and three runs scored in the two games.
Memphis and UAB will play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Tigers Softball Complex. The Tigers and Pouncer will host an Egg Hunt following the contest for all children and Pouncer's Pals members at the game.
