Memphis Defeated in Two Games at Houston on Saturday

HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Memphis softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Houston on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars (17-13, 6-2 C-USA) scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn a 5-1 victory in game one. At the top of the inning, Memphis senior Jessica Phillips'bases loaded RBI single had tied the game.
In game two, Houston's Diedre Outon threw a no-hitter in an 8-0, six-inning victory. An error in the second inning gave Memphis (7-24, 0-8 C-USA) its only base runner in the game.
Memphis and Houston will play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday at noon.
Houston took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the third inning. Jaime Edwards hit a two-out single to left and stole second. Jennifer Klinkert then doubled to drive in Edwards.
Memphis threatened to break out with a big inning in the top of the sixth inning. Three singles by Alyssa Palmieri, Laura Curtis and Ellen Roberts loaded up the bases with one out for Phillips, theMemphis RBI leader. The senior first baseman singled to drive in Morgan Mosbywith the tying run, but Curtis was thrown out at home trying to score on the play and Roberts was tagged out at second to end the inning.
A four run bottom of the sixth for Houston gave the Cougars its 5-1 advantage. UH loaded the bases for the second time in the game on three-straight one-out singles. Holly Anderson than drove in two runs with a single and Haley Outon followed with a two-out single to score two more. Houston had left eight runners on base, including the bases loaded with one out in the second, prior to the big sixth inning.
Roberts (4-11) suffered the loss in the circle for Memphis. The sophomore allowed five runs on 11 hits and struck out six in five and two-third innings. Bailey Watts (8-4) earned the victory for Houston. She allowed one run on six hits with six strikeouts.
Kassy Dunnwas the only Tigers' base runner in the game when she reached on an error at first base in the second inning. But Dunn was thrown out stealing, allowing Outon to pitch to the minimum in six innings. Outon (5-3) struck out eight in six innings and did not allow a walk.
Freshman Jordan Richwood (1-7) suffered the loss for Memphis. Richwood allowed six runs on five hits in three and two-third innings with two strikeouts. Senior Lauren Carleypitched the final two innings and allowed two runs on two hits.
Houston took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Ashleigh Jones reached base as the leadoff batter on an error at third and scored on a double steal.
The Cougars scored five more runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up 6-0. Reina Gaber hit a three-run home run and Melissa Greggson also had a RBI single in the inning.
Jennifer Klinkert drove in a Houston run in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly and Sydney Gerbracht scored the eighth run from second on a game-ending error at short with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.
