Houston Shuts Out Memphis for Series Sweep
March 25, 2012
Freshman Sara Pearson recorded the only Memphis hit in the game with a single in the second inning. Memphis (7-26, 0-9 C-USA) left four runners on base in the five-inning run rule loss.
Bailey Watts (9-4) earned the victory in relief for Houston (18-13, 7-2 C-USA). Watts pitched the final three innings and allowed no hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Diedre Outon started the game for the Cougars and gave up one hit with a walk.
Ellen Roberts (4-12) suffered the loss for Memphis in the circle. The sophomore allowed five runs on six hits with two strikeouts in three and two-third innings. Freshman Jordan Richwood pitched the final third of an inning and allowed three runs on three hits.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on an unlucky break for the Tigers. With two outs and runners on second and third, Haley Outon hit a line drive back to the pitcher that popped out of Roberts' glove and allowed Reina Gaber to score from third.
Houston then put the game away with a seven-run fourth. After a hit by pitch and a walk, Gaber hit a one-out single to center to score a run. Holly Anderson later followed with a two-out three-run homer. Melissa Gregson then singled and scored on a double by Outon. Kayla Holland followed with a pinc hit two-run homer to give the Cougars an eight-run lead.
Memphis will host five games next week beginning with Murray State on Wednesday in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. The Tigers then host a three-game conference series against Southern Miss on Saturday and Sunday, March 31-April 1.
