HOUSTON - Pitching dominated the University of Memphis softball team as the Tigers dropped both games of a doubleheader to the University of Houston on Saturday at the Cougar Softball Stadium. The Tigers (16-16, 0-7) lost 8-0 and 7-1 to open the three-game conference series against the nationally ranked No. 11 Cougars (30-4, 8-0).
The UH pitching staff combined for one run on three hits in the two games and didn't allow a runner to reach base until the fourth inning of game two. The Tigers reached base four times in the day and had three hits, all coming in the second game.
Houston ace Angel Shamblin (17-2) pitched a five-inning perfect game to open the series in a 9-0 Memphis loss. It is the reigning Conference USA Pitcher of the Year's fifth career no-hitter and second perfect game.
The game marked the second time Memphis has been no-hit and the first perfect game against the Tigers. The U of M were no-hit last season at No. 22 Florida State.
Junior first baseman Leila Dolfo scored the only run for Memphis in the doubleheader with a solo home run over the center field fence in the sixth inning of game two. It is her team-leading eighth dinger of the season for the Tiger leadoff hitter.
Freshman Baillie Lott (6-1), a Tennessee native, earned the victory for Houston in game two, allowing one run on three hits.
The two teams will complete the series on Sunday at noon. The game can be followed live through GameTracker and live streaming video at GoTigersGo.com.
