Hummel Strikes Out School Record 15 Batters as Tigers Defeat Delta Devils, 4-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Carly Hummel set a new school record with 15 strikeouts in a contest in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils at the Tiger Softball Complex in Memphis. The win moves Memphis' record to 15-12 on the season. The Delta Devils fall to 12-16 heading into game two of the doubleheader. Hummel's 15 strikeouts moved past the single-game mark of 14 strikeouts in a game set by Nicki Johnson and Jenna Kubesch on Apr. 28, 2007 against UAB. The Tiger pitcher improved to 9-6 on the season and increased her strike total to 132 on the season. Hummel is currently ranks third all-time in single-season strikeouts among Memphis pitchers. With 15 strikeouts on Wednesday, Hummel tied current Memphis pitcher Janelle Valle's 132 career strikeouts for fourth place. The Tiger freshman ends her 12th start with a 1.55 ERA. The Tigers got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning when Lelani Bernardino scored from third on a double steal with Maddie McKinley moving to second base. The run is the 15th scored by Bernardino during the 2010 season. Mississippi Valley State tied the game up at 1-1 when Angelica Wade scored from second on a throwing error by Memphis cather Keanah Prestridge as she tried to pick Wade off from second. Wade got on base with the Delta Devil's first hit of the game on a double. The Tigers took the lead back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Prestridge, a junior from Moore, Okla., got on base after getting on base on a throwing error by Mississippi Valley State third basemen Ashley Lawrence. Lelani Bernardino drove Prestridge in from third on a sacrifice fly.
Alyssa Palmieri scored the second run of the fourth inning off a Maddie McKinley double. Palmieri reached base on a sacrifice bunt that moved Prestridge over to third. Leigh Rowan, hitting .348 on the season to lead all Tiger batters, hit a single to drive in McKinley for the final run of the inning. Rowan and McKinley led the Tiger bats with two hits apiece. Both players had one RBI. McKinley scored one run in the game. Wade had the only two hits for the Delta Devils in the game. Lisa Jansen suffers the loss for Mississippi Valley State. The senior pitcher from Dietzenbach, Germany, gave up four runs on six hits and struck out nine Tiger batters. Game two of Tuesday's doubleheader is set to begin at approximately 6:25 p.m. |
