Memphis, Tenn. - The University of Memphis softball team (14-20) defeated Austin Peay (16-17) in game one of a double header, Wednesday afternoon behind a double-digit hitting performance. The Tigers recorded five runs in the second inning.

Ellen Roberts (8-11) picked up her 37th career win, which ties the school record. Roberts finished with five strikeouts in six innings pitched.

Sidney Hooper (3-4) and Taylor Mills gave up five hits apiece in the loss for the Lady Govs.

Kelly Braman, Roberts, and Cierra Manhum each recorded two hits each for the Tigers. Roberts finished with two RBI's.

Christiana Gable had the only two hits for Austin Peay.

Both Austin Peay and Memphis threatened in the first inning with runners in scoring position. Either team was able to capitalize as the game entered the second inning.

Courtney Brower reached second base in the second off a wild throw from Calli Irvin. Brower gave the Lady Govs a 1-0 lead, as she was able to run home off another error by the Tigers.

Georganna Goodwin was walked to begin the bottom of the second. Braman followed with a double down the left field line, advancing Goodwin to third. Roberts came through with a hit to left field to bring home Goodwin and tie the game at 1-1.

Mangum and Crowdus were also able to connect on hits with runners in scoring position in the fifth. The Tigers big second inning gave them a 5-1 lead.

The game turned into a pitching dual, as both teams recorded a couple hits apiece. Christiana Gable gave the Lady Govs two hits in the third and fourth innings. Mangum picked up her second hit of the game in the fourth with a single to center field.

Braman provided the Tigers seventh hit of the game with a single to center field in the fifth inning. Roberts recorded her second RBI of the afternoon, which brought home Braman and gave the Tigers a 6-1 advantage.

Hits from Jaye Smith, Irvin, and a wild pitch from Hooper brought in runners for the Tigers, ending the game at 9-1 in the sixth inning.

Memphis will play game two of the double header against Austin Peay.
