Memphis Softball Takes Down Austin Peay, 8-5, in Second Game

Memphis, Tenn. - The University of Memphis softball team (15-20) took down Austin Peay (16-18) in game two of the doubleheader. The Tigers finished game two with 12 hits, which gave them 24 total hits for the doubleheader.
Ellen Roberts picked up her second save of the season, as she entered the game in the seventh inning. Roberts picked up two strikeouts in the win.
Allie Blackwood (0-1) pitched five innings in the circle for the Lady Govs. Brianna Bartuccio finished out the game, pitching the final inning. Kayla Davidson and Mel Pavels finished with two hits each, as Laurel Burroughs and Kristin Whitmore each recorded one hit.
Both Austin Peay and Memphis connected on hits in the first inning. Pavels and Burroughs each hit singles to bring in runners and give the Lady Govs a 2-0 lead.
Memphis responded in the bottom of the inning with hits from Irvin, Braman, and Goodwin. Goodwin's double brought in two runners for the Tigers. Memphis was able to pull ahead of Austin Peay, 4-2, after one inning.
Courtney Brower was able to score from second base to home off an error from the Tigers in the second, giving Memphis a 4-3 advantage.
Memphis added to their lead in the third inning with a single to right field from Braman, bringing home Brittany Vaughn, which gave the Tigers a 5-3 lead. Vaughn reached base for the 12th straight game off a single to left field.
Whitmire hit a solo home run over the center field fence in the fourth, 5-4 Memphis lead.
Austin Peay found themselves with the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth after a hit from Davidson. Novak found a way to get the Tigers out of the inning with no damage done with a 5-4 lead headed into the bottom of the fifth.
Memphis threatened in the fifth inning as Hill and Irvin picked up hits for the Tigers. Blackwood would not give up another hit in the inning and stranded both runners on base.
Davidson connected on her second hit of the game in the sixth inning. The double by Davidson brought in Marissa Lake for the Lady Govs and tied the game at 5-5.
Memphis finally broke through in the sixth inning with three doubles from Goodwin, Smith, and Irvin.
Goodwin doubled for the second time in the game, with a hit to right field. Smith then doubled to bring home pinch runners, Breslin Perry and Ijiah Hargrove. Irvin followed with another double to bring in Smith, which gave the Tigers an 8-5 lead after six innings.
Roberts entered the game in the seventh inning and did not disappoint. She struck out two batters to win the game for the Tigers, 8-5.
Memphis opens American Athletic Conference play with a home series against Temple, this weekend. The Tigers will play a doubleheader Saturday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. (CT). The final game will be played Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT).
