Tigers fall to Tulsa, 7-0
April 3, 2011
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Tulsa bats produced a steady stream of hits on Sunday on the way to a 7-0 win over Memphis in the final game between the Tigers and Golden Hurricane. With the win, Tulsa (27-9, 10-2 C-USA) completes the series sweep as Memphis falls to 22-9 overall and 6-6 in conference play this season.
The Golden Hurricane struck right away in the top of the first with Jill Barrett and Skylar Swanson each singling to reach and the base runners would advance to second and third on a wild pitch from Lauren Carley. One more wild pitch would score Barrett before Memphis would get out of the inning.
Heather Mott responded well in the bottom of the first, but her single to left field to open the game offensively for the Tigers would end up being one of only two hits for the Blue and Gray. Meanwhile, Tulsa tallied 10 hits against Carley and Janelle Valle who entered the game for Memphis in the sixth.
Three errors by the Tigers' infield also contributed to Memphis' demise; just four of the seven Golden Hurricane runs were earned, with the other three runs coming around via errors. Mott's third-inning error was followed by a prolonged Tulsa sequence that ended with Jill Barrett scoring on Lacey Middlebrooks' fielder's choice.
Two more Golden Hurricane runs came home in the seventh by way of a senior Maddie McKinley error that scored pinch-runner Keri Leach and Middlebrooks'.
Tulsa's Aimee Creger pitched a complete game for the Golden Hurricane, allowing just the two hits and walking four. Creger tallied 10 strikeouts in Sunday's contest, in addition to her 15-strikeout performance in the first game on Saturday, and now boasts a 14-1 mark this season.
Carley pitched five innings and scattered seven hits and three earned in the loss, dropping her to 3-4 in 2011.
The Tigers are back for mid-week action with a doubleheader against Alabama State on Wednesday, April 6. The first game begins at 3 p.m. at Tiger Softball Complex.
