April 6, 2014
Memphis, Tenn.-- University of Memphis senior Ellen Roberts set two school records in the Tigers 1-0 victory over Temple at Tigers Softball Complex Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Tigers take their first American Athletic Conference series.
With the win, Memphis improves to 17-21 overall and 2-6 in conference play. Temple falls 10-17 and 1-5.
Senior Ellen Roberts (9-12) became the all-time record holder at Memphis in career wins and strikeouts in the game. The Australian picked up her 38th career victory to move ahead of Carly Hummel and Jenna Kubesch for sole possession of first place. She also struck out four to give her 446 career strikeouts to pass Hummel for first place.
The shutout is the second of the season for Roberts and third for the Tigers. Roberts now has eight career shutouts.
Memphis took the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Lindsey Crowdus led off the inning with a double down the left line and later scored on a RBI single by Brittany Vaughn.
Temple had scoring threats in the fifth and seventh innings. The Owls' fifth inning scoring opportunity began when Toni Santos singled and Sarah Preizoso doubled, putting runners at second and third with one out. But, Roberts retired Julia Kastner on a pop-up to first and struck out Leah Lucas looking to end the Temple threat.
The Owls also had an opportunity in the seventh when they loaded the bases with two outs. Lucas, however flied out to Jaye Smith in right field to end the game.
Temple's Jessica Mahoney (1-6) suffered the loss in the circle. Mahoney struck out three and allowed one run on four hits and three walks.
The Tigers return to the field next week for a non-conference game against UT Martin, Wednesday Apr. 9 at 5 p.m. (CT).
