The University of Memphis softball team (17-22) lost a close 2-0 game to UT Martin (22-16-1) Wednesday afternoon at the Tigers Softball Complex.
Ellen Roberts (9-13) finished with a season-high and tied her career-high with 13 strikeouts. Roberts pitched her 14th complete game of the season.
Casey Vincent (5-4) finished with four strikeouts in the win. Brooke Kennedy picked up the save for UT Martin, her first of the season. Taylor Manning finished with three hits and two RBI's for the Skyhawks.
Roberts started the game off strong, striking out the first four batters for UT Martin.
Braman was able to get the offense going early for the Tigers with a single up the middle in the first inning. Vincent retired the inning with her first strikeout of the game as the Tigers stranded two on base.
Manning came through with a hit for the Skyhawks off a double to left field in the second. The hit brought in Bella Zizzi, who pinch ran for Deven Wilson, giving UT Martin the 1-0 advantage.
The game turned into a pitching dual in the third, as Roberts recorded two more strikeouts, giving her seven for the game. Vincent followed, as she recorded her fourth strikeout to end the third.
Stephanie Nidiffer picked up her first hit of the game with a double to left in the fourth. Manning followed up with her second double of the afternoon, bringing in Nidiffer to give the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead.
Elizabeth Wiegland relieved Vincent in the bottom of the fourth, picking up one strikeout, as UT Martin had retired 10-straight Memphis batters.
Roberts came through with her 11th strikeout of the game to retire the fifth inning, stranding one Skyhawk runner on base.
Roberts' 11 strikeouts in the fifth inning gave her a season-high. She recorded 10 strikeouts in an 8-3 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on March 14th.
The Tigers picked up two hits in the fifth with singles from Goodwin and Mangum. The two were stranded on base to end the inning.
Manning recorded her third hit of the game with a single in the sixth inning but was stranded on base as Roberts struck picked up her 12th strikeouts to retire the inning.
Kennedy entered the game in the middle of the sixth to relive Wiegland in the circle. Wiegland finished with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched for the Skyhawks. Kennedy struck out one, as the Tigers were unable to reach base. The game entered the seventh, UT Martin leading, 2-0.
Roberts would pick up her 13th strikeout of the game in the seventh. The 13 strikeouts tied Roberts' career record for strikeouts in a game and are tied for seventh place in program history.
The Tigers were unable to record a hit in the bottom of the seventh, as UT Martin won, 2-0.
Memphis will continue its 10-game home stand with a three-game series with Houston on Saturday and Sunday.
