HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Memphis softball team was shutout in a 5-0 loss to Houston in the second game of the doubleheader at the Cougar Softball Stadium. Houston had previously won game one, 4-0.

Freshman RHP Bailey Watts (10-7) no hit the Tigers in the loss.

Memphis had just two base runners in the game, a walk to Lelani Bernardino to lead off the first inning and a walk to Kim Sirman to lead off the sixth. Watts struck out nine in her first career no hitter as the Tigers K'd a total of 20 times in the two games.

Memphis falls to 19-15 on the season and 6-7 in Conference USA, while Houston improves to 22-19 and 7-7.

Senior Vanessa Walle (7-6) suffered the loss. Walle allowed three runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings. She walked two and struck out four. Junior Lauren Carley pitched the final 1 1/3 innings in relief for the Tigers and allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits.

Houston took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Katy Beth Sherman led off the inning with a double to left center. A sac bunt by Mary Tyler Dobson moved Sherman to third, allowing Melissa Gregson's single through the left side

The Cougars then added to its lead with two more runs in the fifth inning on RBI singles by Reina Gaber and Angela Spittler. Houston completed the scoring with two runs in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Holly Anderson and an unearned run on a single by Dobson.

Memphis and Houston will close the three-game series with a noon contest on Sunday.
