MEMPHIS - Sophomore Lyndsey Sterling hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the sixth to cap a four-run inning as the University of Memphis softball team run-ruled Alcorn State, 11-3, in game one of a doubleheader on Thursday at the UM Softball Complex.
Senior Nicki Johnson (10-9) earned her 10th victory of the year after pitching five innings. The Tucson, Ariz., native allowed two earned runs on six hits and struck out four. Senior Jenna Kubesch pitched a scoreless inning, striking out the side in the sixth in the win.
Memphis scored four runs in the second, three in the fifth and four in the sixth in a 13-hit performance. Senior third baseman Bridgette McNulty led the Lady Tigers with a 3-for-4 performance with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Junior catcher Lindsay Keslo also knocked in two runs and had her first career triple.
In the first inning, Johnson pitched herself out of a bases loaded one-out jam. An error, a single and a walk juiced the bases for Alcorn State, but Johnson struck out Tonya Nelms for the second out and threw out Keandra McLemore at first on a ground ball to end the threat.
Memphis then scored four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 lead. McNulty led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a throwing error from a ground ball hit by senior first baseman Kara Ross. With one out, the runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Senior Lindsey Pridgen then hit an RBI single to center field to score the first run of the game. An Alcorn State error allowed the second run to score, and then a single by Brittany Gooch scored the third run. A fielder's choice by Kelso capped the scoring drive in the inning.
Alcorn State came within one of the Memphis lead with three runs in the top of the fifth. But Memphis answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 7-3. Memphis then ended the game with four runs in the sixth inning that began with a solo home run by sophomore shortstop Leila Dolfo.
