April 13, 2013
MEMPHIS -The University of Memphis softball team battled back from an early deficit to earn a 3-2 win in game one of a doubleheader with UCF on Saturday afternoon at the Tigers Softball Complex.
UCF (22-22, 4-12 C-USA) took an early lead in the top of the first on a two-out solo home run by Farrah Sullivan that barely cleared the left field fence. Memphis (19-27, 7-9 C-USA) threatened with runners in scoring position in the first, third and fourth innings, before rallying late with three runs in the fifth to take the lead.
The win is the fourth-straight for Memphis in conference play and second victory of the season against a top 100 RPI team. The Knights came into the game ranked No. 62 in the RPI despite trailing the Tigers in the conference standings.
Senior outfielder Lelani Bernardino led Memphis at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a run scored and a double. Freshman third baseman Cierra Mangum went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Both players increased their season-long hitting streaks with Bernardino now hitting safely in eight-straight games and Mangum increasing her streak to six games.
Junior RHP Ellen Roberts (10-18) earned her 10th victory of the season, allowing one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Reigning C-USA Pitcher of the Week Mackenzie Audas (11-14) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in four and two-third innings.
Memphis had its fair chances to tie the game early on. The Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first inning, but Audas struck out Amber Lindahl and Kelly Braman to end the inning.
Two innings later, Bernardino led off the bottom of the third with a double down the left field line and advanced to third with one out on a sac bunt by Laura Curtis. The Tigers called a squeeze play, but the pitch was high and left Bernardino caught in a rundown coming home.
Memphis finally broke free with three runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Bernardino began the rally with a one-out single and a stolen base. She came around to score the tying run on a two-out single up the middle by Morgan Mosby. After a walk to Mangum, Lindahl singled to deep short to drive in Mosby. Mangum scored the third run on a throwing error at third base on a ground ball hit by Braman.
UCF countered with a run in the top of the sixth. Pinch hitter Samantha McCloskey reached on a fielding error at first. Kahley Novak then advanced to third on a stolen base and a ground ball before scoring on a single by Taylor Wagner.
The two teams continue the three-game series with the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday and the final game at noon on Sunday.
