April 14, 2010
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Carly Hummel tossed a one-hit shutout as the University of Memphis softball team defeated the Alabama State Hornets 5-0 in game two of Wednesday’s doubleheader. Hummel tied her own record for the most strikeouts in a single game (15). She had previously set the record against Mississippi Valley State on March 30. This is the third time Memphis has lost a no-hitter in the seventh inning this season. Lauren Carley had a no-hitter through 6 1/3 innings in game one of Wednesday’s doubleheader before Quaniesha Limbrick’s seventh-inning single broke it up. Limbrick played spoiler again in game two, connecting on a two-strike, two-out pitch from Hummel and sending it into left field for the Hornets’ first hit of the game. The Tigers would get things started by loading the bases in the bottom of the second inning. A Nikki Moreno walk allowed Heather Mott to score, giving Memphis a 1-0 advantage. Lelani Bernardino then drove in Kailey Kassner on a fielder’s choice. Maddie McKinley’s two-RBI single drove in Alyssa Palmieri and Moreno to complete a four-run second inning for the Tigers.
