MEMPHIS, Tenn. –
The University of Memphis (21-26) defeated Alcorn State (7-33) in a run rule, 9-0, in five innings. Brittany Vaughn recorded five RBI in the win for the Tigers.
Senior pitcher Ellen Roberts (11-15) picked up the win for Memphis. Roberts finished with five strikeouts in 4.0 innings pitched. Calli Irvin retired Roberts in the fifth inning and finished with one strikeout.
Chqueta Givens finished with two hits for the Lady Braves.
Givens was able to get the bats going early for the Lady Braves as she singled to left field in the first inning. Roberts recorded two strikeouts to retire the innings and strand Givens at second Hill provided the Tigers with their first hit with a single up the middle in the first.
Hill was able to move her way around the bases and reached home off a wild pitch from Castillo to give the Memphis the 1-0 lead after one inning of play.
Rayven Riggs singled off a blooper to left field but was then called out at second as Breana O’Leary hit into a fielder’s choice. Roberts recorded her third strikeout of the game to strand O’Leary at first base.
Braman hit her fourth home run of the season with a shot over the left field wall to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead after two innings.
Givens reached first for the second time of the afternoon with a single to left field. Givens was stranded at first as Roberts recorded her fourth strikeout of the game.
The third inning proved to be a big one for the Tigers as three runs were scored. Hill reached first base off an error on the throw after Smith was already walked to begin the inning. Vaughn provided a three-run home run to left field to bring in Smith and Hill and give the Tigers a 5-0 lead after three innings of play.
The Lady Braves were unable to get anything going in the top of the fourth.
The Tigers followed their big third innings with another in the fourth. Memphis had hits from Smith, Crowdus, Vaughn, and Goodwin. Vaughn hit a double to center field to bring in two for the Tigers and Goodwin followed with a single that brought in Vaughn, giving the Tigers a 9-0 lead.
Irvin began the fifth inning in the circle for the Tigers. She struck out one as Memphis defeated Alcorn State,9-0, on a five-inning run rule.
The Tigers are now 13-4 when scoring first and 11-4 when hitting a least one home run
