CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Early on it became evident the first team to score a run would most likely be the team that would pull off the victory. Austin Peay scored that run in the fifth inning to shutout the University of Memphis softball team, 1-0, on Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader at Lady Govs Field.
Memphis' Jenna Kubesch and Austin Peay's Natasha Anderson battled each other in a pitching duel with both hurlers allowing just one hit through the first four innings. The Tigers had three baserunners through four compared to one by the Lady Govs.
The Tigers' chance to score that first run came at the top of the fifth inning. Memphis put together two hits in the inning. With two outs, Tori Gross doubled to left center. Leila Dolfo followed with her second hit in the game. The shortstop had trouble with the line drive but recovered in time to throw out Gross who tried to score from second.
The Lady Govs succeeded in its scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fifth. Sarah Longmire led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sac bunt. Brittany Williams then hit a two-out RBI single to the left side. Austin Peay stranded runners on second and third to end the inning.
Kubesch suffered the loss after allowing just one run on three hits and striking out five. The senior falls to 18-10 on the season.
