@Memphis Softball Falls to Houston, 7-4

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis softball team (22-35, 8-16 C-USA) left 13 runners on base in a 7-4 loss to Houston (35-16, 17-4 C-USA) on Senior Day at Tigers Softball Complex.
Houston took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Kendra Cullum led off with a one-out single and later scored on a throwing error. Haley Outon followed with a two-run homer to centerfield.
Memphis put its first run on the board in the second inning. After loading the bases with one-out, Ijiah Hargrove scored on a two-out error on a ball hit to short by Morgan Mosby. The Tigers stranded the bases loaded in the inning.
The Cougars added two more runs in the third inning. Anderson and Kayla Holland came in to score on a single and an error to left field by Reina Gaber.
The Tigers made it a two-run game with two runs in the bottom of the third. Memphis loaded the bases with a pair of errors and a hit batter with no outs. After the Tigers grounded into a 5-2-3 double play, pinch hitter Libby Goranson delivered a two-out single up the middle to score two runs.
Anderson hit her third home run of the series to lead off the fifth inning to increase the Houston lead to 6-3. The Cougars followed the dinger with a double by Outon and a single by Gaber with no outs, but stranded the runners on the corners thanks to a pair of strikeouts by Jordan Richwood.
Hargrove drove in an unearned run for Memphis in the bottom of the inning with a one-out single up the middle to score pinch runner Lindsie Knowles from second.
Anderson knocked in her second run of the game for Houston in the sixth inning with a one-out single to left to score Julia Pecina from third and make it a 7-4 Cougar lead.
With Memphis down to its final three outs, Ellen Roberts and Hargrove both singled to put runners on with one out. However, the Tigers could not drive in any more runs after a fielder's choice and a groundout, resulting in a 7-4 loss.
Summer Groholski (6-4) earned the win for the Cougars in 4.1 innings in the circle, while Roberts was given the loss for Memphis. Hargrove and Kelly Braman led the Tigers with two hits apiece.
Memphis closes out the regular season with a doubleheader on the road against Murray State beginning at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1.
