MEMPHIS - UAB scored eight unearned runs in a 14-0 shutout over the University of Memphis softball team in the final game of the regular season on Wednesday at the Tiger Softball Complex.

With the loss, Memphis finishes ninth in the Conference USA standings and will head to the Helen of Troy C-USA Softball Championship in El Paso, Texas next week. The Tigers will open the single-elimination tournament on Thursday, May 7, in a play-in game against the eighth seeded team, which will be either UAB or UTEP. The Miners would have to be swept at UCF to finish eighth.

The winner of the play-in game will face the No. 1 seed later that day, which will either be East Carolina or Tulsa. ECU ends the year with a bye in conference play and Tulsa faces Southern Miss at home. If Tulsa sweeps the Golden Eagles, it will be the top seed in the tournament.

The Blazers dug a hole for the Tigers early with four runs in the second and then capped the game with a seven-run sixth to earn the run-rule victory. UAB had six of its 12 hits in the final inning and scored eight unearned runs on four U of M errors.

Memphis finished the game with four singles and left seven runners on base. The team was unable to capitalize on a bases loaded situation with one out in the third inning as UAB held the Tigers scoreless for the second time in as many days.

Kimber Bossom (6-5) took the loss in her first conference start since March 22 against Tulsa. The sophomore allowed three earned runs on two hits in an inning plus. Memphis used all four of its pitchers in the games with Vanessa Walle getting the bulk of the work. The junior pitched four and a third innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits.

Amber Torres (8-6) earned the shutout victory for UAB. Torres held Memphis to four hits and walked three for her eighth victory of the season.

Four Blazers finished with two RBI and nine different players recorded hits in the game. UAB was led by Martina Landrum who finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
