PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 2014 University of Memphis softball team was picked to finish in a tie for sixth in the American Athletic Conference’s inaugural preseason poll as selected by the league’s coaches, the conference announced Friday. Memphis and UConn each received 15 points in the poll.

The Tigers finished with a 24-36 overall record and an 8-16 mark in Conference USA action last season. Memphis enters the American Athletic Conference with seven starters and 14 letterwinners returning from 2013, as the team will look to improve its win total for the third consecutive season under head coach Natalie Poole.

No. 19/18 Louisville was picked by the coaches to win the league, followed by No. 25/23 USF and old Conference USA rival Houston. UCF and Rutgers are fourth and fifth, with UConn, Memphis and Temple rounding out the 2014 preseason poll.

Memphis opens the 2014 season Feb. 7-9 at the Troy Subway Invitational in Troy, Ala. The Tigers will face Middle Tennessee, Kennesaw State, Troy and North Florida during the three-day event.

Memphis will take part in the Ragin’ Cajuns Invitational Feb. 14-16 in Lafayette, La., before returning home to host this year’s Blues City Classic Feb. 21-23 in Southaven, Miss.
