Softball Opens Home Schedule with Blues City Classic

For Immediate Release Blues City Classic Tournament Page SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - The University of Memphis softball team opens up its 2008 home schedule by hosting the second annual Blues City Classic at Greenbrook Park in Southaven, Miss., beginning Friday. The Tigers will open the three-day tournament at noon on Friday against Morehead State and will follow with a contest against Evansville at approximately 2:15 p.m. On Saturdy, Memphis plays Southeast Missouri at noon and Alabama A&M at 2:15 p.m. The Tigers close the tournament on Sunday against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 12:15 p.m. Last year Memphis placed second in the tournament with a 3-1 record, finishing behind Evansville. Southeast Missouri and Alabama A&M also participated in the tournament in 2007. The U of M will meet Morehead State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff for the first time in the softball program's history. Memphis is 0-1 all-time against Evansville, 3-2 against SEMO and 1-0 against Alabama A&M. The Tigers beat Southeast Missouri 2-1 in nine innings last year in the tournament and Alabama A&M, 7-4. 2007 Blues City Classic champion Evansville beat the U of M 3-2 in the Tigers only loss in the tournament last year. Memphis will once again use Greenbrook Park to host the tournament. The team hosts the tournament at the facility, just over the Tennessee state line to take advantage of the complex's multiple fields. Overall, the Tigers are 19-8 all-time at Greenbrook Park and the team has belted 27 home runs in the 27 games, while batting over .300. Last year Memphis went 7-1 at Greenbrook Park with 14 home runs, nine doubles and a .311 batting average. All the games in the Blues City Classic will have live stats through Gametracker.
