March 20, 2008
For Immediate Release BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Memphis travels to UAB for a three-game series beginning Friday at George Ward Park Field #6 in Birmingham, Ala. The two teams will begin the series on Friday at 6 p.m. and will close with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m. The Tigers enter the match-up with a 16-11 record and have won five of its last six games. Memphis is 2-4 this season on the road. Last week, the U of M was the Silver Division winner in the Winthrop/adidas Invitational after posting a 3-1 record in the tournament. The U of M owns a 4-2 all-time record against the Blazers and has won the last four games, including a three-game sweep in Memphis last season. Memphis dashed UAB's tournament hopes last year with its sweep that ended the season for the Blazers. The three game sweep was the first of six-straight conference victories for Memphis to give the Tigers the remaining spot in the C-USA tournament. All three games between the two schools last year were decided by a run, including a 5-4 11-inning thriller. Memphis is 1-2 all-time in Birmingham and last traveled to the city in 2006 for a three-game series. The Blazers are 14-18 and 1-5 in the conference. UAB has lost nine of its last 10 games and are in a three-game losing streak after dropping both games of a midweek doubleheader with South Alabama. Through 32 games, the Blazers are at or near the bottom of nearly all of the primary offensive categories in Conference USA, and the 18 losses ranks last in the league. UAB's pitching staff ranks third in C-USA in strikeouts, and senior Jennifer Nelson leads the conference with 158 strikeouts. She ranks third all-time in strikeouts in C-USA. Following the series with UAB, the Tigers will close out March by traveling to Houston for a league three-game series with the Cougars on Saturday and Sunday, March 29-30.
