For Immediate Release
MEMPHIS - The University of Memphis softball team hosts an in-state doubleheader with the University of Tennessee at Martin at the Tiger Softball Complex on Wednesday at 4 and 6 p.m.
Memphis enters the match-up with a 14-18 overall record and are 2-7 in C-USA. Last week, the Tigers won one out of three games at Southern Miss. UT Martin (18-14, 2-6 Ohio Valley) has lost the last six games, including two last week to Ohio Valley leader Jacksonville State.
The Tigers are 4-2 all-time against the Skyhawks and have won the last four meetings. The two UT Martin victories came in Memphis' inaugural season in 2006 at Martin, Tenn. Last year, Memphis earned 6-4 and 5-2 wins at UT Martin. The Tigers hold a 22-18 all-time scoring advantage against the Skyhawks and are 2-0 against the team at home.
Memphis has been plagued this season by what can be referred to as the Tom Glavine syndrome. If Memphis can get out of the first couple of innings unscathed, the chances for a victory dramatically increase for the Tigers.
The U of M has allowed 41 runs in the first inning and 63 of 157 runs allowed (40 percent) have come in the first two innings. Opponents have scored the game-winning run in the first or second inning in all but six of the 18 Tiger losses. Memphis has scored all but three of its 14 game-winning runs after the second inning.
The midweek doubleheader will mark the reunion of Memphis assistant coach Ashley Blanton with her former employer. Blanton spent the 2006 season as a graduate assistant coach with UT Martin.
In the series between Memphis and UT Martin, Blanton has always served on the winning team. Her one year with the Skyhawks saw the team defeat the Tigers in a doubleheader sweep. Since coming to Memphis, the U of M has won four-straight against UT Martin.
Sophomore southpaw Janelle Valle led Memphis last week in the circle with a 1-1 record, pitching two one-run games at Southern Miss. Valle earned a 2-1 victory in the second game of a doubleheader with the Golden Eagles and then followed with a two-hitter in a 3-2 loss in the series finale. She threw five no-hit innings to end the game.
The Tigers are hitting .268 as a team and is tied for second in the conference in doubles with 43. Junior Leigh Rowan leads the team with a .385 average and has hit safely in four-straight games.
The Skyhawks lead the Ohio Valley Conference in ERA with a 2.20 mark. Senior Kara Harper leads the squad with a 7-5 record and a 1.84 ERA.
UT Martin is hitting .268 and are led by junior Laura Roberts who is batting .352 with 28 RBI, five home runs and 21 runs scored. Freshman Jenny Bain leads the squad in home runs (8) and runs scored (26) and has 22 RBI with a .330 batting average.
