Softball Travels to Hattiesburg to Face Southern Miss in C-USA Action

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -The University of Memphis softball team gets back into conference play this weekend with a three-game series against Southern Miss in Hattiesburg on Saturday and Sunday at the USM Softball Complex.
The series will begin at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday with a doubleheader before wrapping up play Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest.
Memphis (15-26, 3-9 C-USA) holds an 11-9 all-time record against Southern Miss (11-26, 1-10 C-USA) with the Tigers winning six of the last seven meetings. Last season, Memphis opened its series against USM with a thrilling 3-2 victory in 13 innings before downing the Golden Eagles 2-0 in the second game. The Tigers could not complete the sweep in the series finale, falling 2-1.
The Tigers went 1-1 against Belmont on Tuesday, dropping a 7-0 decision in the first game before winning 2-0 in the second game. Jordan Richwood allowed just three hits and one walk while fanning seven in a complete game effort. Redshirt senior outfielder Lelani Bernardino and junior infielder Kelly Braman each tallied three hits during the series to lead the Tigers. In Memphis' 2-0 win, Bernardino drove in both runs for the Tigers with a single to center field and a triple down the right field line.
Senior infielder Morgan Mosby leads Memphis this season with a .317 batting average and a .431 slugging percentage. The Hernando, Miss. native has also put together a team-best 39 hits and 15 RBI in 38 games this season.
Junior RHP Ellen Roberts (7-17) leads the Tigers with a 3.38 ERA in the circle with 15 complete games and 129 strikeouts in 151.0 innings pitched. Sophomore RHP Jordan Richwood (7-8) has totaled 120 strikeouts in 93.1 innings pitched to rank 22nd in the nation in strikeouts per seven innings with 9.2 per game.
Southern Miss is on a five-game losing streak with two losses earlier this week in a doubleheader against Troy. The Golden Eagles' lone conference win came two weeks ago with a 4-3 over UTEP in nine innings. USM has been swept by Houston, Marshall and UAB along with one loss to UTEP for a 1-10 mark in Conference USA.
For the Golden Eagles, sophomore infielder Caroline Walker leads the team at the plate with a .330 batting average. Walker has totaled a team-best 20 runs and nine doubles along with a .489 slugging percentage and a .434 on base percentage. Freshman infielder Morgan McKeever leads the team with 35 hits and is second for USM in hitting with a .292 batting average.
Senior RHP Kimberly Wagner (6-5) has seen the most time in the circle this season for the Golden Eagles with 18 appearances and 87.1 innings pitched. Wagner has compiled a 3.45 ERA, allowing 89 hits and 57 runs this season. Senior RHP Beth Dietrich (1-7) has a team-best 3.31 ERA in 17 appearances and 61.1 innings pitched. Dietrich has totaled five complete games and three saves on the year. Also seeing some time in the circle for USM has been freshman RHP Kaitlin Wilson, who has thrown 82.0 innings to record a 4-10 record. Wilson has started a team-best 13 games and leads the Golden Eagles with 46 strikeouts.
Following its series against Southern Miss, Memphis will wrap up its 11-game road swing against ULM next Wednesday at 5 p.m. CT in Monroe, La.
