MEMPHIS – University of Memphis’ Ellen Roberts was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association softball pitcher of the week for her performance from March 30-April 5.
Roberts helped the Tigers to a 4-1 record for the week and a conference series victory against Temple. The senior also became the school’s all-time leader in wins and strikeouts during the week.
This is the third weekly honor for Roberts by TSWA and first this season.
A senior from Australia, Roberts went 2-1 in the circle with two saves and a 0.32 ERA in 22 innings pitched. She held opponents to one earned run, a .088 batting average and had a WHIP of 0.55.
The lone loss in the week came in a one-hitter in a 1-0 loss in the opening game against Temple. Roberts allowed just two base runners in the game with the only hit being a solo home run.
In a midweek doubleheader with Austin Peay, the right hander allowed an unearned run on two hits with five strikeouts for the victory in game one. She then pitched a perfect seventh with two strikeouts for the save in game two.
Roberts came on in relief in the second game against Temple with the tying run on first base and recorded three-straight outs for her second save of the week. She has three saves this season and holds the school career record for saves with seven.
In the rubber match of the series with the Owls, Roberts pitched a four-hit 1-0 shutout for the series win. She earned a school record 38th career victory in the win and recorded her 446th career strikeout to also set a new program high.
For the season, Roberts is 9-12 with a 2.33 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 132.1 innings pitched.
