The University of Memphis softball team is set to square off against another non-conference opponent with UT Martin on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The Tigers are 8-2 all-time in the matchup against UT Martin. Memphis has won the last eight matchups and last defeated the Skyhawks in 2013, 4-2. UT Martin will be the fourth Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) team the Tigers have faced in 2014. Memphis is 4-0 against the OVC this season, with wins over Morehead State, Southeast Missouri, and Austin Peay (2x).
UT Martin (21-16-1, 9-3 Ohio Valley) carries an 8-6 road record into Wednesday's game at the Tigers Softball Complex. The Skyhawks also ride a seven-game winning streak and have won eight out of their last 10 games. The lone tie on their record came against Bowling Green, 6-6 (8), on Feb. 16th at the Georgia State Tournament in Atlanta, Ga.
Senior Kayla Wade has a .368 batting average (44-for-123) for the Skyhawks. Wade leads the team in hits (44), triples (2), and stolen bases (17). Sophomore Deven Wilson has a .349 batting average and leads the team in RBI (21), doubles (9), and total bases (55). Lauren Smith adds a team-high five home runs for Skyhawks.
Freshman pitcher Elizabeth Wiegland is 10-4 in the circle with a 2.99 ERA in 19 appearances. Wiegland has recorded 60 strikeouts, 10 complete games, in 107.2 innings pitched. Casey Vincent has posted a 4-4 record in the circle with a 2.68 ERA. Vincent has 12 appearances this season to go along with 45 strikeouts in 65.1 innings pitched for the Skyhawks.
Memphis (17-21, 2-6 The American) went 4-1 last week, which included a mid-week doubleheader win over Austin Peay and clinched a home series win against Temple. The Tigers are 9-3 at home and have won four of their last five games.
Senior pitcher Ellen Roberts became the school's all-time leader in wins and strikeouts during the past week. She was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Pitcher of the Week from March 30-April 5 as well as named to the American Conference weekly Honor Roll for the third time this season.
Roberts (9-12) has a 2.33 ERA in 28 appearances for Memphis. Roberts has pitched 13 complete games this season and 132.1 total innings. She adds a team-high three saves for the Tigers.
Freshman Lindsay Crowdus continues to lead her team with her .368 batting average (43-for-117) this season. Crowdus' seven triples this season leads the team as well as the country in the category. Crowdus also leads leads the team in hits (43) and total bases (61).
Freshman Brittany Vaughn has a .324 batting average (33-for-102) and leads the team in doubles (10) and RBI (23). Sophomore Georganna Goodwin has come on strong as of lately, batting .300 over the last 10 games for the Tigers. Goodwin also recorded two home runs, two doubles, and seven RBI's over those games.
Memphis will continue its 10-game home stand with a three-game series with Houston on Saturday and Sunday.
