The University of Memphis softball team looks to take down American Athletic Conference leader, the Houston Cougars, this weekend at the Tigers Softball Complex.

The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. The final game will be played Sunday at 11 a.m.

No. 2 seeded Houston knocked the University of Memphis out of the Conference USA Championship Tournament with a 9-1, five-inning victory over the Tigers on Thursday afternoon.


Houston (24-11, 9-0 The American) is receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA Poll (15) and the ESPN.com/USA Softball Poll (10) in the April 8th rankings. The Cougars split a two-game home series against No. 12 Baylor, Tuesday night.

Memphis is 6-20 all-time in the matchup against Houston, with the Cougars winning the last seven games. The two teams last played in the 2013 C-USA Tournament on May 9th, as Houston won 9-1. The Tigers last defeated the Cougars on March 30th, 2011, with a 2-0 score.

The Tigers are 2-6 against American Athletic Conference (AAC) foes in 2014. Memphis took down Temple twice in a three-game home series, last weekend. Houston is 4-2 on the road this season and is the only AAC team with an unblemished 9-0 league record.

Sophomore Katie St. Pierre leads the Cougars with a .412 batting average (40-for97). St. Pierre leads the team in hits (40), has batted in 29 runs, and 41 total bases. Senior Haley Outon has a team-high in home runs (9), RBI (37), and slugging percentage (.615) for Houston. Sophomore Selena Hernandez leads the team in total bases (62) and doubles (10).

Senior Diedre Outon (Haley’s twin sister) is 11-5 in the circle with a 2.42 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 23 appearances. Outon adds a team-high eight complete games for the Cougars. Sophomore Julana Shrum (9-4) has a 3.25 ERA in 20 appearances and 42 total strikeouts for Houston.

Memphis (17-22, 2-6 The American) fell to UT Martin, 2-0, in a non-conference game, Wednesday. Pitcher Ellen Roberts recorded 13 strikeouts in the loss, which is a season-high and tied a career-high for the senior. Roberts has reached the 13-srtrikeout marker three times in her career. The Tigers are 9-4 at home and have won four of their last six games.

Roberts (9-13) has a 2.31 ERA in the circle with 118 strikeouts in 29 appearances. Roberts has pitched 14 complete games and three saves in 139.1 innings pitched. Christian Novak (7-7) has a 3.51 ERA with 68 strikeouts in 20 appearances. Novak has pitched 4 complete games in 85.1 total innings.

Freshman Lindsay Crowdus leads her team with a .358 batting average (43-for-120) and triples (7). The seven triples from Crowdus this season also leads the NCAA in the category. Freshman Brittany Vaughn leads her team in RBI (23) and doubles (10). Freshman Calli Irvin and senior Kelly Braman have each hit three home runs this season for the Tigers.

Saturday’s first 250 fans will receive free ice cream sponsored by Turner Dairy. Also, one lucky fan will draw for a chance to receive free ice cream for a year. An egg hunt for Pouncer Pals Spring Fling will follow Sunday’s game.

The Tigers will conclude their 10-game home stand against Mississippi Valley State Apr. 15th at 5 p.m.
