Memphis Hosts Afternoon Doubleheader with Tennessee State on Wednesday

For Immediate Release MEMPHIS - The University of Memphis softball team will play its final midweek home game of the season on Wednesday afternoon in a in-state doubleheader with Tennessee State at the UM Softball Complex beginning at 2 p.m. The Lady Tigers enter the contest with a 26-17 overall record and 4-9 in Conference USA. The team is two wins shy of matching its win total from its inaugural season in 2006 and have 15 games left on the schedule. Tennessee State comes to Memphis with a 28-18 record and is 7-11 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Swinging a hot bat for the U of M is sophomore catcher Kimmi Hayden. Hayden went 5-for-7 in two games against East Carolina and is now third in batting average on the team at .299. She is second in the league in conference only games with a .436 average. When conference play started a month ago, Hayden was hitting only .170 and has since raised it almost 130 points. Senior right handed pitcher Jenna Kubesch enters the week as the reigning C-USA Pitcher of the Week. Kubesch went 2-0 last week with 25 strikeouts and a 1.19 ERA in 17.2 innings of work. In a 7-0 victory over Alcorn State, she threw here fourth career no-hitter and second of the season. She also struck out a Memphis record 13 batters in the game. Tennessee State is led by junior pitcher Amanda Vaught who has notched 213 strikeouts on the season, becoming the first Tiger to eclipse the 200 mark. Vaught is the first Tiger to be honored as the Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week and has earned the selection twice this season. Memphis is 2-0 all-time against TSU with a doubleheader sweep in Nashville last season. The Lady Tigers have yet to allow a run against the in-state opponent, shutting them out 3-0 and 4-0.
