Memphis Makes Final Regular Season Road Trip with Series at ECU

GREENSVILLE, N.C. - The University of Memphis softball team hits the road for the final time in the 2009 regular season with a three-game series at East Carolina beginning Saturday. The two teams will play a doubleheader at 1/3 p.m. (EST) on Saturday and close with an 11:30 a.m. contest on Sunday.
The Tigers (20-22, 5-10) have won four of its last five games and will compete against the Pirates (31-11, 14-4) who stand alone at the top of the Conference USA standings.
East Carolina leads the all-time series with Memphis, 5-3, and the Pirates have won the last four contests. The two teams have met one time previously in Greenville, N.C., and split a rain-shortened series in 2007. Memphis has outscored East Carolina 38-35 in the eight games between the two schools.
Memphis enters the series after splitting its final midweek doubleheader of the season with two 2-1 games against Samford. The Tigers came from behind to win game one, but fell in game two after coming back to tie the game. Junior Vanessa Walle pitched 11 of the 14 innings and allowed two runs on six hits.
Last week, the Tigers swept a three-game league series against preseason conference favorite Houston in Memphis. The U of M made comebacks in all three games after early Cougar leads and handed Houston its first league sweep since Louisville did it in 2005.
Offensively, Memphis is led by senior Leila Dolfo who is batting .304 with 21 RBI, seven doubles and 19 runs scored. Senior Tori Gross is batting .397 with 26 runs scored and a team high four home runs.
Sophomore Janelle Valle leads the team in pitching with a 3.05 ERA. She is 7-9 in 17 starts and has struck out 61 batters in 110.1 innings of work. Walle is also 7-9 on the year with a 3.70 ERA and sophomore Kimber Bossom is 6-4 with a 4.18 ERA.
East Carolina is led in the circle by sophomore Toni Paisley, who is the reigning co-C-USA Pitcher of the Week. It is her sixth award this season and fourth in the last five weeks. Paisley is 23-6 on the season with a 1.22 ERA and 222 K's in 200.1 innings.
Senior Jessica Johnson leads the Pirates in hitting with a .383 average, 31 RBI, seven home runs and 26 runs scored.
