@MemphisSoftball Travels to Face Rutgers

The University of Memphis softball team travels to Piscataway, N.J. for the first time in school history to take on Rutgers in a three-game series on Friday and Saturday. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday at 11 a.m. CT/12 p.m. ET and close with a single game on Saturday at 10 a.m. CT/11 ET.
Memphis (19-25, 3-8 The American) enters this weekend’s series riding a two-game winning streak. The Tigers defeated American Athletic Conference (AAC) leader Houston in the final game of a three-game series in a 6-5 victory. Memphis also took down non-conference foe Mississippi Valley State, 4-0, Tuesday.
Rutgers (19-15, 3-6 The American) is 1-0 all-time in the matchup against Memphis. The lone matchup between the two took place on Mar. 5, 2010 at the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. The Scarlet Knights defeated the Tigers in extra innings, 2-1 (8).
The Scarlet Knights will be the Tigers fifth AAC opponent this season. Memphis has two conference wins against Temple and a lone victory versus Houston. The Tigers are 21-43 all-time against opponents from the American Conference.
Junior Jackie Bates leads Rutgers and the conference with a .421 batting average (45-for-107). Bates also leads the Scarlet Knights in hits (45), doubles (13), RBI (30), and total bases (73). Junior Chandler Howard has a .379 batting average (44-for-116) and leads the team with six home runs.
Junior Alyssa Landrith is 12-6 in the circle with a 2.56 ERA in 22 appearances for Rutgers. Landrith leads the team in wins (12), strikeouts (142), and saves (1) in 126.0 innings pitched. Freshman Shayla Sweeney has also seen time in the circle with a 5.51 ERA and a 5-8 record. Sweeney has 30 strikeouts in 15 appearances for the Scarlet Knights.
For Memphis, Lindsay Crowdus (.387), Cierra Mangum (.385), and Ellen Roberts (.333) are all hitting above .300 in the last 10 games. Sophomore Georganna Goodwin led the team during that stretch with 11 RBI and her 16 RBI on the season rank tied for second on the team. Goodwin also had two home runs during those last 10 games.
Crowdus leads the team with a .373 batting average (50-for-134). She leads the team and the nation in triples (7) and total bases (69). Crowdus’ .373 batting average ranks seventh-best in the conference.
Freshman pitcher Christian Novak has a 3.50 ERA during the last 10 games, going 4-0. Novak recorded 18 strikeouts in 22 innings during that stretch. Roberts (9-14) has a 2.51 ERA on the season with 121 strikeouts in 153.1 innings pitched. The senior pitcher has 14 complete games and three saves.
Following this weekend’s series against Rutgers, Memphis will return home for a doubleheader against Alcorn State on Wednesday, April 23. First pitch it slated for 4 p.m. (CT).
