EL PASO, Texas - The University of Memphis opens the 2009 Conference USA Championship Presented by Helen of Troy in El Paso, Texas, as the ninth seed and will face eighth seeded UAB in a play-in game on Thursday at 9 a.m. (MST).

The winner of the nine-team, single elimination tournament will play No. 1 seed Tulsa that same day at 2:30 p.m. Tulsa ended the season with a three-game sweep over Southern Miss to jump idle East Carolina for the regular season title.

Memphis (22-29, 7-17 C-USA) will look to end UAB's (19-32, 8-16) season for the third-straight year. The Tigers beat the Blazers as the ninth seed in the play-in game last season in Houston, Texas, 8-6. In 2007, Memphis swept UAB at home and then swept UCF to jump ahead of the Blazers in the standing and take the final spot in the C-USA Championship when only the top six teams made the tournament.

UAB beat Memphis at home in two of three games to end the Tigers' regular season. Both Blazer wins came were run-ruled, including a 14-0 loss in the regular season finale. UAB holds a 7-6 all-time advantage over the Tigers with Memphis claiming the lone neutral site victory last year.

The winner of the Tulsa vs. Memphis/UAB contest will face No. 4 Marshall or No. 5 UCF in the semifinals on Friday at 2p.m. The C-USA Championship game will be played on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and will be broadcast by CBS College Sports.
