Memphis Opens C-USA Softball Championship with No. 2 Seed Houston

MEMPHIS - The University of Memphis will play Houston in the opening round of the 2013 Conference USA Softball Championship in Tulsa, Okla., on Thursday, May 9, at 11 a.m.
The Tigers earned the seventh seed in the conference tournament and are pitted against the No. 2 seeded Cougars in the single elimination tournament. The winner will play the winner between No. 3 seed Tulsa and No. 6 seed UCF at 2 p.m. on Friday in the semifinals. The championship will be on Saturday at 11 a.m. and will be televised on the CBS Sports Network.
Memphis finished the season 24-35 and went 8-16 in conference play. The Tigers enter the tournament after a bye week in league competition. Memphis ended the regular season with a doubleheader sweep at Murray State.
Houston (37-17, 19-5 C-USA) finished a half game behind regular season C-USA Champion UAB in the conference standings. The Blazers avoided a series sweep and claimed its first championship with a 7-3 victory against the Cougars on Sunday.
Memphis was swept in a three-game series against Houston on April 27-28. The Cougars won the first two games of the doubleheader 6-0 before claiming a 7-4 win in the final game of the series.
Houston holds a 19-6 all-time advantage against Memphis and is 1-0 in the C-USA Tournament against the Tigers. This will be the first meeting on a neutral playing surface for the two teams.
The Tigers are 3-7 all-time in the C-USA Tournament. The last time Memphis won its opening game in the tournament came in 2010 when as the No. 7 seed the Tigers upset No. 2 seeded Tulsa, 5-1. Last year Memphis also earned the No. 7 seed and fell 2-0 at UAB in the opening round.
