May 20, 2010
STARKVILLE, Miss. - University of Memphis senior pitcher/utility Vanessa Walle was selected to the 2010 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I Midwest All-Region second team on Thursday.
Walle is just the second Memphis player to earn all-region honors and the first since former utility standout Leila Dolfo was named to the second team as a freshman in 2006.
A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Walle was named to the All-Conference USA second team as a utility player after spending time the season at pitcher, designated player and first base. She finished the season with 22 starts at pitcher, 15 as the designated player and seven at first base. In the circle, Walle went 8-13 with a 2.17 ERA, which ranked in the top 10 in the conference. She also ranked in the top 10 in the league in earned runs allowed (33), fewest walks allowed (34), fewest triples allowed (0) and fewest home runs allowed (7). Walle led the team in conference play with a 2.42 ERA.
Offensively, Walle was tied for first on the team with five home runs and had 20 RBI and a .393 slugging percentage. Twice during the season, she provided both the offense and the defense. She had a career best five RBI with a grand slam against North Florida in a 7-1 victory, which she also earned the win on the mound. She later had two home runs and four RBI in a 6-1 victory over Tulsa, a game in which she also pitched a complete game.
Walle hit a three-run home run in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Championship against No. 2 seed Tulsa to help Memphis reach its first ever semifinals with a 5-1 victory. She will continue to remain with the Memphis softball team, serving as a student assistant coach next season.
