A week after helping Habitat for Humanity with the framing of a home in the Memphis area, the University of Memphis softball team will join the Southside Boys & Girls Club with its "Back to School" cookout on Saturday, September 20, from 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

The celebration will take place at the Southside BGC at 677 Richmond Avenue in Memphis. The event is the capstone to a successful school supply drive held for the 550 at-risk children of the Southside BGC. Also attending the event are representatives from the city and county government, schools of higher education and the Memphis Redbirds.

Activities will include games, food, giveaways and a softball game among public officials and business leaders. The Tigers will umpire and coach the softball game.

Other special guests expected to attend are Mayor Willie Herenton; MCS Board Commissioner Dr. Freda Williams; Councilman Edmund Ford, Jr.; Councilwoman Wanda Halbert; Reggie Williams, VP of Community Relations, Memphis Redbirds; Ron Parr, VP for Finance & Admin., Southwest Tennessee Community College; and Patrick Byrne, AutoZone Liberty Bowl Football Classic and former Tiger quarterback.
