Softball Garners Four 2008-09 NFCA Scholar Athletes

MEMPHIS - University of Memphis softball players Leila Dolfo, Kim Sirman, Lyndsey Sterling and Janelle Valle were named 2008-09 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Scholar Athletes. The distinction is given to players who maintain a 3.5 GPA during the academic year.
The Tigers also placed 97th among the NFCA All-Academic Teams. Teams must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher to be considered, with all of this year's recipients having at least a 2.75 GPA. The U of M finished the 2008-09 academic year with a combined GPA of 3.051.
Memphis was among five Conference USA schools to be recognized among the best academically. Other league schools joining Memphis on the NFCA list were East Carolina (40th), Marshall (53rd), UAB (63rd) and UTEP (93rd).
Dolfo graduated from Memphis in May with a degree in communications. A three-time All-Conference USA selection, she holds nearly every offensive record at Memphis after her four-year career with the Tigers. Dolfo earned a 4.0 in the spring semester of 2009 and twice was selected to the Tiger Academic 30. She is a two-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient and was a 2009 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Third Team selection.
Sirman is a first time recipient of the NFCA Scholar Athlete award. The junior outfielder is a two-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll selection and a four-time Tiger 3.0 Club member awarded to Memphis student-athletes who have at least a 3.0 GPA for the semester. Sirman played in 31 games in 2009 with two starts and scored nine runs.
Sterling is also a first time recipient and graduated from Memphis in May of 2009 with a degree in communications. A four-year letterwinner with the Tiger program, Sterling is a three-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient. The pitcher was named to the Tiger Academic 30 in the spring of 2009 after finishing the semester with a 4.0. She made 30 appearances during her career with Memphis.
Valle is the lone repeat winner of the NFCA Scholar Athlete Award, also earning the recognition in 2007-08. The junior pitcher was named to the 2009 C-USA Academic Softball Team and has earned the C-USA Academic Medal twice. She was also named to the 2009 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar First Team. Valle led the team in 2009 with a 3.14 ERA and finished with an 8-14 record in the circle.
