Softball Places Two on NFCA Scholar Athlete List

For Immediate Release MEMPHIS - University of Memphis softball players Jenna Kubesch and Tori Gross were named 2005-06 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar Athletes. The distinction is given to players who maintain a 3.5 GPA and play in at least 75 percent of the team's games during the academic year. Kubesch, who graduated with a bachelor's degree in journalism and public relations in 2006, had previously been named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV First Team. The senior pitcher has also been named to the Tiger 3.0 Club, Dean's List, Tiger Academic 30 and Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll during the 2005-06 academic year. The Weimar, Texas, native sported a 13-12 record in 30 appearances for the Lady Tigers in 2006 and led the team with a 1.87 ERA, 158 strikeouts and six shutouts. Kubesch is currently seeking a master's degree in sport and leisure commerce. Gross has also been named to the Tiger 3.0 club and C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll during the past year. The sophomore second baseman is planning to major in business at Memphis. Gross started 52 of 53 games in 2006 for the Lady Tigers and hit .230 with 13 RBI and 17 runs scored. The San Diego, Calif., native was third on the team in stolen bases with eight.
