Lady Tigers Sweep Lipscomb to Begin 2013

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis women's tennis team (1-0) made quick work of the Lipscomb Bisons (0-1) on Tuesday afternoon as the Lady Tigers swept LU, 7-0, to begin the 2013 season.
Junior Stefanie Mikesz and freshman Caroline Wegner easily took down LU's Melissa Kromer and Alyssa Bellini, 8-0, before freshmen Liza Tymchenko and Skylar Kuykendall earned the point for the Lady Tigers with 8-2 victory over Lorena Djuknic and Shilpa Naruka.
In singles play, the Lady Tigers earned all six wins in straight sets as graduate student Tiffany Welcher defeated Kromer, 6-0, 6-1, in the No. 1 spot while Courtney Collins earned her first singles win of the season with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Deahna Welcher at No. 2. In the No. 3 spot, Kuykendall pulled out a 6-0, 6-2 win over Bellini before sophomore Alyssa Hibberd won against Djuknic, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles. At No. 6, senior Kelly Gray defeated Naruka, 6-0, 6-2,while Wegner wrapped up the day for Memphis with a comeback win over Jenny Borck, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.
Memphis faces UT Martin tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at The Racquet Club of Memphis before heading to Athens, Ga., this weekend to compete in the Georgia Invitational.
