CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 31 University of Memphis women's tennis team (1-0) opened up the 2014 dual season by recording a 4-2 victory Saturday morning over No. 39 VCU (2-1) to begin the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.

Comprised of the top 60 teams from around the country, the Lady Tigers collected their first win at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend after losing matches to No. 9 Alabama and No. 24 Tulsa last season in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Memphis began the day by taking two of three doubles matches to go up 1-0 over the Rams. VCU took an advantage early as the team of Cindy Chala and Yukako Noi defeated Alyssa Hibberd and Caroline Wegner, 6-2, at No. 1. The Lady Tigers answered with Anki Wind and Stefanie Mikesz taking down Daria Yakauleva and Olga Barscheuskaya, 6-4, at No. 2 before Skylar Kuykendall and Marta Morga defeated Salome Kvitashvili and Olga Terteac, 7-5, at No. 3 to clinch the point.

In singles, Chala evened up the match for VCU at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Mikesz. The Rams then went on top as Kvitashvili defeated Hibberd, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4), at No. 3 for a 2-1 lead. Morga and Wind put the Lady Tigers back in front as Morga took down Yakauleva in a tight battle, 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (11-9), before Wind was triumphant over Terteac, 7-5, 6-2, for a 3-2 advantage. At No. 4, Wegner ended the match for Memphis by posting a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Barscheuskaya for the 4-2 win.

"This new format is exciting and makes matches close at all times no matter what the score," said head coach Lee Taylor Walker. "I'm proud of the team for their resiliency in doubles and singles."

Memphis will face either No. 3 North Carolina or No. 62 Denver tomorrow at 12 p.m. (CT) in the championship match. The winner will advance to the National Team Indoor Championship, Feb. 7-10, in Charlottesville, N.C.
