Women's Tennis Opens Season With 5-2 Win
Jan. 27, 2008
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Amanda Brown won her first career singles match at No. 1 to help seal a 5-2 Memphis victory in the women's tennis season opener, Sunday. The win marks the first Memphis win of the spring dual season and gives Lee Taylor Walker his first career coaching victory.
"I'm really excited," Walker said. "I'm proud of the girls. It sounds cliché, but it was a team effort, literally every single person on our team contributed. We were down 3-0 on every court in doubles in the first five minutes and everyone came back and fought back. Hopefully this is something they can build on."
Memphis opened the match by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Newcomer Ashley Murdock then won her first career match in a Memphis uniform at No. 4 singles to make it 2-0 Memphis. UTM answered back with a win at No. 2 singles to pull to 2-1, but sophomore Dara Toulch quickly answered back with a Lady Tiger victory at No. 6 to pull Memphis within one point of the win. UTM held off the loss for one more match, picking up a win at No. 5 singles before Brown put away her win at No. 1 to push Memphis to 1-0 on the season. Marjorie Ondeck came back to add a fifth Memphis point after coming back from a second set loss to win her tiebreaker 10-8.
Memphis will take its unbeaten record on the road for a match at UALR, Wednesday.
