Jan. 29, 2011
MEMPHIS, Tenn.--The Lady Tigers returned home from a tough trip on the road to settle in at The Racquet Club of Memphis and sweep the Skyhawks of UT-Martin on Friday night in a 7-0 decision. The victory extended their home winning streak to nine, dating back to the 2010 spring season.
Memphis (1-2) switched up pairings at the No. 2 and 3 positions for the home opener and the netters powered their way through doubles swiftly, kicked off by an 8-0 victory at the No. 2 spot by sophomores Courtney Collins and Kelly Gray over Jodie Tiley and Ivon Simic.
Sophomore Andrea Arques-Garcia was the first to conclude in singles at No.5 when UT-Martin's Johanie Van Zyl withdrew in the second set due to injury. The next to finish was freshman Stefanie Mikesz, who defeated Anna Winklemann dominating fashion, 6-0, 6-1.
Freshman Kathleen Hawkins locked up the match for the Lady Tigers with her 6-1, 6-0 routing of Anna Marie Herbold. Junior Mariya Slupska, Gray and Collins would all play out their singles matches at No. 2, 4 and 1 respectively, completing the sweep for the Blue and Gray.
Memphis women's tennis is back on the court for a double-header Saturday, Jan. 29 at the Racquet Club of Memphis, where they will take on Troy University at 3:30 p.m. followed by Lipscomb at 7:30 p.m.
